You could potentially generate any number of affiliate referrals for your affiliate program that can range from a few dozen or all the way up to thousands. If this number happens to be just a few names added to your list, it’s easy; you can just memorize all of these people.
But what do you do if you have collected as many names as you might find in the phone book for Seattle or Baltimore? You could lose track of your affiliate referrals which will directly impact your income because you have concrete way of monitoring all of your referrals. If you know how to keep track of your affiliate referrals, both off and on line, you’ll never have to worry about this.
Affiliate Referrals - Offline tracking techniques
Affiliate marketers do a lot of their work online of course, but not all of your prospecting necessarily has to be done online. You can generate plenty of useful leads offline as well.
If you’re someone who has an active social or business life, you no doubt go to a lot of conferences, trade shows and so on to get affiliate referrals. If you do this, be sure to follow up with all of the prospects you meet at these events.
You should make a point of getting business cards from potential referrals. This card should have all the information you need to get a hold of this person later. If you go to a lot of events, make notes on the back of these cards so that you remember where you met them and any business you may have discussed with them.
Keep any cards which you collected as prospects for your affiliate marketing program separate from the rest of your business cards to prevent confusion when you contact them later.
Affiliate Referrals - Online tracking techniques
Online resources allow you to easily track your affiliate referrals – one of the best ways is to use:
An affiliate referral tracking application
Once you start to gather a lot of referrals, you may have a hard time keeping track of all of these referrals yourself. It would be far easier to find an application to handle this for you. Some referral tracking applications are freely available, though there are paid programs that are available and offer more functionality; if your affiliate business is large enough, it may be worth it to secure and buy for yourself the paid programs that have a more complex versions as compared to a free one.
These applications offer ease of use and in many cases extra features such as monitoring your banner exchanges, affiliate links and start pages; among other things you’ll be doing to promote your website.
Your affiliate marketing program’s tracking system
Most of the larger affiliate programs already have tracking systems in place for affiliate referrals – check for this with your affiliate program. You should be able to access this using only your affiliate ID.
Your affiliate program can do this easily thanks to the tracking cookies which are encoded in the affiliate links on your website. When visitors click through this link to the merchant’s site, the merchant’s tracking system records this unique code. Activities related to this code will be kept in the company’s system and can be viewed at any time.
