Search Engine Optimization (or SEO) is a relatively simple idea that you will need to have a basic understanding if you are serious and would want to succeed with your affiliate marketing efforts.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of using targeted keywords and key phrases which are relevant to the content of your site in order to make sure that your website comes up as high as possible in the list of search results when someone searches using those keywords or key phrases.

More or less, SEO involves fine tuning your site’s content, HTML tags and meta tags. Another part of SEO is link building. The big search engines – Google, Yahoo and others keep the criteria and algorithms with which they use a closely guarded secret to keep spammers from exploiting the way that their engines work.

Search engines will use hundreds of different factors to rank both individual pages and whole sites and how high they appear in organic listing – but these factors and their rank within the system is unknown and changes often. These algorithms are so different from each other that what ranks first in one engine could come in three hundred in another.

To be listed, a new site does not necessarily have to be submitted to the search engines; just a link from an established site will get the search engines to index the new site. However, it can take a few days to a few weeks for this to happen across all of the major search engine’s spiders.
